About
The TLC Foundation was created after a group of professionals and parents recognised the challenges faced by families raising children with complex needs.
The inspiration for the charity came from the journey of a young girl known as K. K lives with Down syndrome and autism, alongside severe and complex learning difficulties. Observing her growth highlighted the wider challenges faced not only by K, but also by many of her friends at special needs school and their families.
Through conversations with parents, it became clear that many families experience similar difficulties. Caring for a child with complex needs can place significant emotional, financial, and practical pressures on family life. Parents spoke about exhaustion, isolation, uncertainty about the future, and the impact on employment and income. Many also shared concerns about the wellbeing of siblings, who often grow up witnessing medical emergencies or stressful situations at home.
In response, a pilot parent support group was created. Listening to these families showed how little support was available within the community. From these early meetings, the TLC Foundation was formed.

Mission
Today, TLC provides practical and emotional support for families. We run parent support groups, social and recreational activities for children and siblings, and provide access to specialist advice and services. We create safe spaces where families can share experiences, access resources, and feel understood.
Our aim is to help families live enjoyable and manageable lives while caring for their child with dignity and confidence. We want every family to feel supported, included, and able to create positive experiences together.
To understand what families truly needed, we asked parents five simple questions:
• What would help make your life easier and more supported?
• What would help your child with special needs live a happy life?
• What support would help your other children and siblings?
• What would strengthen your family as a whole?
• What support would help you personally as a parent or carer?
The answers showed that support must focus on the whole family. When one part of the family struggles, the impact is felt by everyone.
We often describe this using the idea of a three-legged stool. Each leg supports the others, and if one is weakened the whole structure becomes unstable. Families thrive when parents, children with complex needs, and siblings all receive the support they need.
Vision
Looking to the future, we aim to expand our services so every family raising a child with complex needs can access:
• Regular social and therapeutic activities for children with complex needs
• Programs that support siblings’ wellbeing and inclusion• Tailored support for parents and carers, including advice, respite options, and community connections
• Opportunities to build networks, reduce isolation, and strengthen family resilience
TLC understands the commitment required to care for a child with special needs and the impact this can have on every family member. We recognise the emotional strain, the lack of sleep, the financial pressures, and the isolation that many families experience. We also understand the challenges faced by siblings who may feel overlooked as parents focus on the immediate needs of their brother or sister.
Our charity exists to strengthen the whole family, helping parents, children with complex needs, and siblings feel supported, connected, and valued. By providing practical help and social connections, we aim to help families live enjoyable and manageable lives while caring for their child with dignity and confidence.
